Nov. 21, 2014—Two CFISD educators have been selected by Google to attend the Google Teacher Academy in Austin Dec. 2-3.

Instructional technology specialist Jessica Powell and M. Robinson Elementary School fourth-grade math and science teacher Joseph Kirkland will attend the two-day intensive program that recognizes educators achieving innovative and exciting accomplishments in their classrooms with technology.

Fifty participants will receive hands-on experience with Google’s products and technologies while learning about innovative instructional strategies and receiving resources to share with colleagues. Upon completion, Academy participants become Google Certified Teachers who share what they learn with other educators in their local regions and beyond.

“I am beyond excited to be a part of this Google Teacher Academy,” Kirkland said. “Hundreds of amazing educators from around the world have applied multiple times, and I was able to get in on my first try. I have used the Google universe in my classroom many years. I have done several presentations on the power of using Google in the classroom, so to have the opportunity to surround myself with other individuals who are doing amazing things is a dream come true.”

Powell said she assumed she had little chance of being accepted, and was thrilled to learn she would attend alongside Kirkland.

“To have two people from one school district attending the same Google Teacher Academy is amazing,” she said. “I've been aGooglephile for many years and have aspired to be a Google Certified Teacher for the past several years. Because of the competitiveness of this annual event, I was truly shocked when I was accepted. There are so many exemplary educators using Google to teach who I knew were applying to this academy. I'm honored to be included and to represent CyFair ISD while I do it.“

Google Certified Teachers are exceptional educators with a passion for using innovative tools to improve teaching and learning, as well as creative leaders and ambassadors for change.

The Google Certified Teacher program was launched in 2006 with the first Academy held at Google headquarters in Mountain View. The program has since held academies across the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, with more than 800 educators worldwide earning the designation.
